„Trade instead of aid“ is the theme of africrops! GmbH a Berlin based sister company of africrops! New York. Founded in 2013 by Dr. Heinrich Heinrichs and Meinolf Kuper, africrops! dedicates itself to direct fair trade of agricultural products from Africa.
Direct fair trade for underutilized species and novel foods
africrops! is a good example for applied direct fair trade. They build on long-term business realtionships, provide free consulting for the farmers on cultivation and sales of their products and foster the cooperative production approach and organisation of smallholders. Furthermore africrops! let smallholders set the prices, guarantee long-run purchase contracts and grant advance financing.
What are the results? With their work africrops! contributes to stabilisation of smallholder structures, ecologically sustainable cultivation and increases income for producers.
Moringa, the superfood
At the core of africrops! business currently is one of the worlds most amazing plants: Moringa oleifera. Moringa (the „drumstick tree“), originally from India but now at home throughout eastern and southwestern Africa, is a bush-type plant with green leaves. The seeds, roots, stems and leaves are edible. The leaves are said to contain the highest amount of antioxidants known so far in a plant and they come along with a lot of vitamins and a high proportion of proteins thus lining moringa up with other „superheroes of functionality“ like Açaí, Goji, Noni, Green Tea, Acerola, Pomegranate, etc.
Moringa actually already is available at online shops in all different forms like oil, powder, pills. However, africrops! seems to be one of the few providers, that supports direct fair trade of this interesting plant.
